Our horses are available for
adoption to good homes only!
Many of our horses have been the victims of abuse, ignorance
and/or neglect - we hope to break the cycle in the horse's life. Many
times horses return time after time to livestock auctions, until they are bought
by the killers and shipped to slaughter. Please never sell a horse
at a livestock auction!
Applications for adoption may be
submitted on line or sent via postal mail. However,
we now require you, the applicant, to gather all information needed to have your
application processed. This requires that
you have 2 personal references complete a personal reference form or write a
letter of reference for you along with having your vet office write a letter of
reference or complete the vet reference form. IHR
has posted examples of references needed. We require pictures of your
facility, showing the shelter for horses and your fencing.
This enables us to process your application much quicker to help you in your
search for the right horse!
You must still be a member of APC/IHR to
adopt but you may wait to pay the membership fee until you pick out the horse
you wish to adopt.
Applications can be processed while you
are at the Frankfort facility should you have an interest in a horse and have
your paperwork together.
5/24/04 -
our current adoption donations are $250, $550, and $750. These donations
are based on the horse's condition, size, and ability. We occasionally get
a horse in that may be used for fund raising or a larger breed horse that will
be adopted out at a higher donation due to its size.

Adopting? Please Read This First:
-
If you want a bombproof horse, great with kids, never spooks or one that is always ready to be ridden and
"may do well in jumping or ......", we do not want to be rude, but odds are this is the WRONG place.
We get many horses in that will be great for first time horse owners, but be
patient, it will be worth the wait.
-
Be Realistic - Rescues often take in horses that no one else would, they often have issues, physical and/or psychological in nature. There are
many exceptions, but a bombproof horse or one able to jump well is NOT a normal rescue horse. Please keep this in mind with your requests.
-
Rescue horse are not free, be prepared to pay an adoption
donation. Adoption donations vary and all prospective adoptive homes will go through an approval process before a horse can be placed. We do our best
to serve the horse and the adopter. All donations are tax deductible
as allowed by law or your personal circumstances.

It is Indiana Horse Rescue's and Animal Protection Coalition's policy to attempt to
place each horse in the home best suited to the individual horse. In
addition, horses adopted from APC/IHR cannot be resold, leased,
loaned or given away (please read the
adoption agreement prior to completing an adoption application).
All horses adopted from Animal Protection Coalition are required to have other
equines at the facility where the horse is located as they are herd animals. The
horse cannot be relocated from the original approved facility without notifying
the APC.
You will need to complete our application by e-mail or by printing
it and mailing it to APC (see additional
adoption application information & Adoption
Agreement). The adopter will need to be approved on his/her horsemanship skills. This may be done
with the horse they wish to adopt. In the event there is not a suitable
horse or if the horse is not rideable at that time, we will provide a rideable horse in which to work with. Upon satisfactorily completion of the above APC
will require the completion of the adoption agreement with such terms as APC
may determine. Payment in full of a non-refundable adoption donation is
based upon each individual horse. Upon final adoption of a horse, the adopter
is responsible for the transportation arrangements from APC to the adopter's
facility. Upon placement of a horse, the adopter is required to submit annual health statement from the adopter's veterinarian and
farrier and/or any additional information APC may require.
We have found that the wonderful people
who are interested in adoption a rescue horse understand that rescue horses are
special animals and they may have special needs. Most people
have done research on rescue and open their homes to horses in need. Indiana Horse Rescue has been blessed by the overwhelming interest
that we have gotten from the community.
