It has been a very long week.  IHR was called on 9/6/06 regarding a neglect situation that had been being investigated for 8 months.  Now they needed  help.  Gibson County Animal Services did not feel they had the resources or knowledge to handle this large of a problem.  Director of the Equine Division Anthony Caldwell and 2 volunteers drove down 9/6/06 to meet with Brenda Foley, the Animal Control Officer (ACO) and her staff and do an inspection of the facility.  On 9/7/06, after documenting and making notes on the animals in the barn and quick tour was made of the outdoor pastures.....

Most people think that winter is the worst time for the horses.  While we get a number of reports regarding horse neglect. Spring seems to be when we see even more neglected horses.  In just 4 days the main facility took in 14 horses to care for while the owners work things out with the judicial system.  We do not charge the county to care for these horses, but hope the owner will pay the bond for their care.  Feeding an additional 14 horses - especially horses that need weight and medical care is time consuming and exhausting.  As our East facility said upon delivering 6 last night at 10:30 pm - you could never do this if you didn't love horses.  The other 8 came in after 2:00 a.m. in the morning.  That makes for short nights and long days.   Our East facility is currently housing 1 court case, our southern facility has 3, we need your help.

After taking in horses that have been seized by law enforcement, they must be seen by the veterinarian as soon as possible.  It doesn't matter what else needs done - schedules must be rearranged.  The horses come first.

Since college is out, several of our volunteers have gone home for the summer break, we also have one of our permanent volunteers down at the southern facility to help out there.  Each facility is in need of volunteers.  It doesn't matter if it is for filing papers, returning calls, mailing out flyers, cleaning stalls, brushing horses.....  there is a long list of daily activities.

Do you know a stay at home mom?  an active retired individual?  someone who could help repair fences or even work on broken equipment?  Then there are the trees that need planted, the lawn that needs mowed..... it does not have to be anyone with horse experience, just someone wanting to help out a place in need.

All work done at each of the facilities is done on a volunteer basis, no one is paid to do the work that needs done.  Everyone volunteers out of love for the animals - there is not enough money in this world to give back the way the horses do.

If you can spare even $5.00 each month - that $5.00 goes for feed, hay, salt blocks, mineral blocks, supplements, fencing, repairs, or the wood that is needed to put sides on the new shelters that have gone up.  We have the roof - now we need 3 sides!  Do you have an old refrigerator that you really don't use - we could use it to store medications - we have one that is just about ready to go... how bout that old lawnmower?  shovels?  towels that you would throw away make great towels for cleaning wounds - we don't care what shape they are in - they are for the animals.
